Hard Work and a Little Luck

August 28th, 2013 at 12:39 am

I am working very hard at the tutoring center. Panic has set it knowing half of our students are doing SAT/ACT prep and will be gone shortly. However, myself and my education coordinator (also a good friend) put our heads together and bartered for free advertising so I am sure we will be okay. We have an ad going up on a local deal site similar to Groupon. It costs us nothing, but we split what we sell.

I know there is a lack of tutoring available in our area with the franchise we worked for closing down. Our new center is basically it. We simply need to get the word out of our existence.

The frustrating part is digging into savings and simply not knowing my long-term income. I am trying to remain calm and not freak out. I know I can make this business a success with a lot of hard work and a little luck!

In the meantime, I am going to try and do a little more freelance writing to help make ends meet and stay on the emergency budget.

Laura, do you have any background in marketing? Can you pick up some basic marketing books at the library and try any no cost - low cost ideas suggested? I've no marketing background but I'd identify my target market and go after it in as many ways as I could manage. Can you put out a bio for the local breakfast radio and TV shows to talk about getting children off to a good start and the advantages of tutoring for an extra edge? Have you tried printing off an outline of offerings and delivering them to teachers or core subjects at the appropriate schools within reasonable distance? Video blogs, Twitter etc. are an effective way of getting the people you know to let people they know learn about your tutoring service. Use Yelp, CraigsList Kijjiji + name of your community for people searching for the service you provide.

Sending best wishes for a successful launch of your new service.

I have a little marketing experience and a friend who does it who gave me suggestions (She lives in another state). I have coupon going up on a local deal site (like a Groupon)and we bargained with our local Macaroni Kid chapter (online kids magazine who go to a lot of local events with kids). So far my only costs are pencils engraved with the company info and some flyers.

We tried the schools, but since we aren't a non-profit it is against the rules to distribute there directly (However, my son and teacher friends will have a lot of my pencils). Thank you for the suggestions.
