Teaching Supply Woes

April 30th, 2016 at 02:41 pm

In some ways it is is nice to be teaching again. However, the negatives keep popping up lately, such as suggestions on who to vote for. Maybe I am sensitive, but I do not like my career and politics to mix.

I also found out we are required to give final exams on a scantron. We are also required to purchase them ourselves. I am already miffed my code does not work on the copier and I have had to do all of my copying at home using my own ink. When I asked about reimbursement, I was told to try and print class sets whenever possible (which I do). I was told to keep my receipts and use it as a tax write off. I was finally told I could take a few packs of paper from the supply room. However, I still have to use my own printer and ink if my code won't work. Btw, using another teacher's code is a big no no in case anyone wondered. It is one thing to purchase supply items as an independent contractor. As an employee, it is outrageous.

I have more or less decided I will stick with subbing next year. It is a lot less hassle.

Sorry for the rant! Off to try and relax and enjoy the beautiful weekend. I hope you all have a good one.

So the school administration thinks you should change the way you file your taxes in order to save the school money. And buy your own specialized testing equipment. Have you been there long enough to know if this will be typical? Do coaches have to buy the balls, goal posts, bats, and protective gear? Do music teacher have to buy the band instruments and scores? I'm a little bit angry on your behalf.

How about if you tell the admin that you cannot afford to front the money?

I have read that teachers are among the most frequently IRS audited professions. So, if you claim these things on taxes, you may end up having to defend it later.

    Rant...

This is a huge issue for all teachers everywhere. Teachers are expected to give freely of their time preparing lessons, tests, marking, plus before and after school for busing and sports events, supply a Big ear for everyone's problems along with kleenex, pens, pencils, for 'forgetful' students and more.

We are usually rewarded for our efforts with more work, endless paperwork/reports that never results in what was intended.

Um... wow. If it was just supplying pencils, etc. that would be one thing. I did that all the time. But being expected to make your copies at home on your own printer/ink supply? I'd make my originals at home and print out - but not the copies! Being expected to supply the scan trons? What exactly would they do if you said no?

You can take the $250 teacher credit for your taxes without worry, but beyond that, unless you have enough other stuff to itemize, it won't do any good! If you are a full teacher at the school, you should have a code! Your basic testing supplies should be provided!

That doesn't sound like a school/district I'd want to work at.

OMG can I say I agree about teachers being forced to pay for everything? I cannot tell you how many friends buy books, bookshelves, supplies for their classe? Whenever I see free bookshelves I always grab for friends who are teachers or suggest donating to schools. it's insulting. And now as a parent I always try to give whatever is on the teacher wishlist.
